Description

Dating to 1887, TwelveTrees is a perfect blend of rich heritage, modern conveniences, lush gardens and outdoor spaces. A major restoration and expansion from 2004-2008, by the present owners, preserved the grandeur of the home’s patrician origins while adding the finest features of today’s lifestyle.

Poised on 2.5 acres, stone pillars mark the entry to the private road and larger acreage originally associated with TwelveTrees. Elegant columned verandas at each end of the home’s long horizontal span point to its initial intention as a summer residence. The Tennessee Sandstone terrace with outdoor kitchen, deep tree-shaded lawns and pool and spa area framed with an array of plantings, maintain the estate’s aura of leisure and ease. Indoors the foyer continues straight to the sunroom, its wall of glass allowing for further enjoyment of the serene private grounds.

Preserving the home’s architectural heritage has been paramount. The roof is cedar shingle. In the living room, once the ballroom, the eye is drawn to artfully detailed plaster crown molding its intricate design replicated in the mantel of the fireplace. In the library, a handpainted mural depicts scenes from the works of Charles Dickens painted by an earlier resident. Original plaster walls, carved panel doors, center cut oak floors, leaded-glass panes, crafted baseboards and high ceilings maintain the home’s legend. Carefully chosen décor including Osborne and Little Drapery, Brunschwig and Fils wallpapers, and plantation shutters complement the period style.

Though located in Mendham’s historic district, the home is not listed on the Historical Register, allowing for unencumbered renovations. Rebuilds include the spacious country kitchen sporting custom beadboard cabinetry, Pietra Verde limestone countertops, large island with maple counter and commercial-grade appliances. Radiant heat warms the center cut oak floor here as well as in the family room (an addition) with distinguished arched entry, floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace and French doors opening to the patio.

Upstairs the voluminous master suite has French doors opening to a cedar deck. The bath is elegantly updated—as are all in the home, and the dressing room is a custom-fitted organizational delight. There is a guest suite with sitting room and an in-law suite with kitchen/living/dining room. Two additional bedrooms are each en suite with bath.

Though seemingly tucked away in place and time. TwelveTrees is moments from Mendham’s historic, vibrant town center and daily conveniences.

Mendham Borough, NJ real estate market

About Mendham

Ranking first in New Jersey Monthly’s 2013 “Best Places to Live” survey, residents of Mendham Borough enjoy the historic setting of this quaint six-square-mile community--located in Morris County and surrounded on three sides by Mendham Township, with Bernardsville (Somerset County) to the south--plus the conveniences of a walkable downtown featuring boutique retail shopping and dining options, like the historic Black Horse Inn and Tavern. Other nearby stores located in the Village Shopping Center include a supermarket, pharmacy, and a hardware store as well as additional specialty retailers.

Traditions abound in Mendham Borough, with annual events that bring residents together to meet and mingle.  Music is in the air during the summer concert series and outdoor movie nights, when neighbors picnic in Borough Park.  The annual Labor Day Carnival and Parade is capped off by fireworks that signals it’s back-to-school season.  In December, kids and adults alike bundle up and sip hot cocoa as they warm their hands at the annual 12th Night Bonfire of Christmas trees, organized by the volunteer fire department.

Many children walk to the Borough’s public schools, Hilltop Elementary and Mountain View Middle School, greeted along the way by crossing guards whose smiles are familiar to all after their many years of service.  The West Morris Mendham High School is also located in Mendham, drawing students from Mendham Borough and Mendham Township, as well as the neighboring communities of Chester Borough, Chester Township and Washington Township.
